  1. No sound, all programs

  2. Cannot hear audio CDs playing

  3. Missing volume control icon

  4. How do you set the volume?

  5. More Help! (Send a support request)

If your sound problem only occurs with a particular application, contact the
vendor of that application for help. The following Microsoft article may help to
narrow down the cause of your problem:
Troubleshooting Wave Sound File Problems in Windows 95/98/Me

1) No sound, all programs

Plug a set of stereo headphones into the jack on the and see if can hear sound. If so, it's
the speakers or speaker cable. Most speakers require some sort of power, either from a
small power transformer ("wall wart") or from batteries. Check your speakers and see
how they're powered. Make sure the power source is securely plugged in, or change to
a fresh set of batteries.

2) Cannot hear audio CDs playing

If the sound functions normally except for playing audio CDs, then the audio
cable between the CD drive and the sound board is either missing or loose.
You will need to open your PC and connect it.

3) Missing volume control icon

Style 1
Style 2

Usually, there will be a small yellow speaker icon at the bottom right hand corner of the screen that lets you adjust the sound volume when you click on it. Some brands of sound board install their own volume control software with a different icon, such as Creative Mixer. If you do not see an icon at the bottom right of your screen that lets you adjust the volume, follow these steps:

Make sure the volume control application is installed. Click Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup. From the list of components, click on the Multimedia item and then click the Details button. Scroll to the bottom of the Multimedia list and make sure the Volume Control item has a check next to it. (Click on the image at left to see the details of this dialog box.)

Enable the volume control. Click Start | Settings | Control Panel | Multimedia. On the Audio tab, make sure that the "Show volume control on the taskbar" box is checked. (Click on the image at left to see the details of this dialog box.) Some brands of sound boards provide their own volume control applications, in that case you should clear the checkbox in this dialog and install the software provided with your sound board.

You should now have a volume control icon.

4) How to adjust sound volume

If you do not see a volume control icon on your screen, please see the previous item for instructions on installing it. To adjust the volume, click the volume control icon once. A small slider will appear, moving it up will increase the volume. DO NOT check the box labeled MUTE, it will turn off the sound.

Crash/freeze/hang

To help solve your problem, first consult the resources and links we've listed below. If you still can't resolve your problem, see the bottom of the page for a link to create/send a tech support request.

  1. If your PC crashes or freezes during startup or shutdown specifically, see our Startup and Shutdown troubleshooters.

  2. Many crashes and freeze-ups are caused by problems with the video graphics driver. To see if this is the problem in your case, try turning off video acceleration: Click Start | Settings | Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics and set the hardware accleration to off by sliding the control all the way to the left.

  3. For other crashes, try tapping Dr. Watson, a built-in Windows feature. Click Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Information; then select Dr. Watson from the Tools menu). Dr. Watson takes a snapshot of your system when a program error occurs. You can then use this snapshot to hopefully pinpoint and diagnose the root of the problem. For details on using Dr. Watson, see How to Troubleshoot Program Faults with Dr. Watson
